Retail Selling and Customer Service Lead Use your relational
selling and merchandising expertise to support the fair trade
mission of Ten Thousand Villages as a retail lead! The Retail
Selling and Customer Service Lead contributes to the success of Ten
Thousand Villages in Oak Park by driving sales and delivering and
modeling exceptional customer service standards. Assist the Store
Manager in effectively carrying out day-to-day operations of the
store while contributing to growth in sales and profits.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
1. Customer Service and Sales
Contribute to overall sales growth of the store through
excellent customer service according to Ten Thousand Villages’
Sales and Service Standards by exemplifying the highest level of
customer service standards and sales behaviors and modeling these
behaviors to staff and volunteers.
Regularly track and report on sales completed, ensuring that
sales goals are met or exceeded.
Proactively reach out to clients in order to build
relationships, promote products, and complete sales.
Schedule and facilitate personal shopping appointments,
including private shopping appointments.
Maintain customer information database, seeking and adding
information for new customers and ensuring the integrity of the
Promptly respond to all customer inquiries, including utilizing
the intranet and online catalog to follow up on and/or fulfill
Develop sales-driving ideas, and partner with the Store Manager
in the planning and execution of in-store promotional activities
and sales training.
Anticipate and resolve customer service issues, demonstrating a
proactive approach to customer service whenever possible.
Support loss prevention efforts through attentive customer
service and general awareness of the sales floor.
Help facilitate a sense of excitement in customers, volunteers,
and staff regarding products, artisans, promotions, and
organization mission as a means to meet or exceed sales goals and
promote the mission of Ten Thousand Villages.
2. Store Operations and Leadership
Perform opening and closing procedures, including completing
bank deposits and acting as manager-on-duty when Store Manager is
Communicate sales goals and results, business priorities, and
current advertising/promotions to staff and volunteers, supporting
training as needed.
Assign, monitor, and ensure completion of tasks by staff and
volunteers in a manner consistent with the Store Manager’s
direction, ensuring consistent customer service and sales support
coverage of the sales floor.
Reinforce safe workplace best practices through communication
with customers, volunteers, and staff; modeling best practices; and
contributing to sanitization efforts.
Support visual merchandising initiatives according to Ten
Thousand Villages Visual Merchandising Standards, including helping
with floor moves and maintaining appearance of sales floor.
Assist with merchandise ordering, receiving, pricing, and
stocking; and inventory management activities.
3. Other related duties as assigned.
High school degree or equivalent (GED).
One year experience in retail sales, including relational
selling and merchandise management experience.
Strong sales skills, including proven ability to drive sales in
a fast-paced and goal-oriented environment.
Demonstrated ability to deliver top-notch customer service.
Self-motivated and outgoing.
Superior organizational, time management, and problem-solving
Working knowledge of basic word processing, data management,
email, and internet software applications, including ability to
learn new software.
Ability to perform basic math functions, including balancing
registers and completing bank deposit paperwork.
Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently,
including capacity to take a leadership role in store projects.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Working knowledge of the English language, including verbal and
written language proficiency.
Enthusiasm for the Ten Thousand Villages mission of creating
opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income
by bringing their products and stories to our markets through
long-term, fair trading relationships.
Associate’s degree in business, retail, or related field.
Experience working in a non-profit environment.
Demonstrated proficiency using a retail point-of-sale
Additional information: This is a part-time position
(approximately 20 hours per week) that requires the ability to work
a flexible schedule that requires mornings, evenings, weekends, and
holidays. Some local travel may be required. The above list of job
