About You
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Head of Legal will provide legal advice, negotiate key business agreements, and provide subject matter expertise in areas strategically important to IFS such as licensing and trademark strategy. The Head of Legal will work closely with the CEO and others to define and accomplish the Institute's overall goals and objectives.
IFSI is managed as a distributed team that uses technology and periodic in-person gatherings to stay connected. We are seeking someone who is comfortable with and skilled at remote work, leadership and collaboration. The organization is based in Chicago.
Key Responsibilities:


  • Provide practical general counseling for a broad range of business and legal issues including licensing, trademark and copyright protection and enforcement, program participant releases (drafting and tracking once executed), partnership agreements, data protection, regulatory compliance, employee and contractor agreements, and corporate structure.
  • Be a fully integrated member of IFSI's team, with a focus on legal matters.
  • Quickly and independently draft, review, negotiate, and execute a wide array of agreements including internal tracking thereof.
  • Manage and mitigate legal risks by designing and implementing company policies and procedures or developing other risk mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations that apply to the business.
  • Promote legal, compliance and risk management best practices throughout the company.
  • Communicate with and manage relevant external resources such as external counsel.
  • Stay up to date with changes to legislation that may directly or indirectly affect IFS.
  • Team successfully with members of staff to determine existing and emerging needs requiring legal expertise.
  • Act as a bridge and point of contact with various organizations with which we partner to evolve the partnership and for resolve any legal issues.
  • Perform other duties as required.

      -Education and Experience

      • A JD from an accredited law school with a license to work in Illinois required.
      • 7+ years of experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal department (preferably both)
      • Candidate experience is preferred in one or more of the following areas: commercial contracts, licensing, trademark and copyright.
      • Superior academic credentials and professional references
      • Prior experience working in a professional services organization or mental health field preferred.
