Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYEffectively delivers perioperative
care to the surgical patient through the nursing process of
assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS1. Graduate of an accredited program of
professional nursing education2. Current license as a registered
nurse in the state of Illinois3. CPR Certification4. 2 years recent
perioperative experience or complete approved college perioperative
program; preferred. Nurses who do not meet this requirement must
complete a surgical competency-based orientation program
successfully.5. CNOR preferred SUPERVISIONExercised: Oversees work
of the Surgical Technologists.Received: Reports to Director,
Surgery JOB RELATIONSHIPS (INTERNAL/EXTERNAL)May serve as resource
to surgeon, surgical services or department in sponsored programs
of instruction and training of other healthcare professionals,
students and physicians on behalf of Weiss Memorial Hospital.
Interacts daily with patients, families, physicians, and unit and
hospital personnel. Adjusts patient interaction and/or treatment to
match each patient's age-specific developmental, educational, or
other related needs. JOB DUTIES (* denotes "essential function")1.
Demonstrates the WSMC Customer Service Values, which are key in
providing quality service to patients and customers. *Transcribes
and composes documents, memos, reports, correspondence, orders,
policies, and other assignments.*2. Assess treatment and care for
specific patient populations and plans age appropriate care.
Utilizes hands on physical assessment skills and interview
techniques to formulate a clinical data base; analyzes collected
information derived from patient and other sources to identify
age-appropriate patient problems and needs. Re-assesses on an
ongoing basis and documents findings or changes in condition in the
progress notes. Assess severity of findings and obtains physician
intervention as warranted. *3. Uses data gained through assessment
and collaboration with the health care team to develop a plan of
care for each identified patient problem. *4. Independently
implements plan of care utilizing professional nursing skills and
collaborates with and instructs patients, members of
family/significant other and heath care team. Demonstrates ability
to function in emergency situations. *5. Uses the nursing process
to formulate appropriate questions for measuring outcomes.
Evaluates patient responses to therapeutic intervention. Uses
multiple sources of information to validate findings. Makes
judgments based on the data collected. *6. Documents selective data
on appropriate forms and enters designated information into the
computer. Actively participates in the Quality Assurance and
Improvement Process. *7. Supports department of nursing and
hospital policy and procedures.8. Performs scrub and circulating
duties. *9. Operates electrocautery, tourniquets, autoclaves,
positioning equipment, tables, and the perioperative suite. *10.
Complies with surgery department policy and procedures. Complies
with the Standards, Recommended Practices, & Guidelines established
by AORN. Complies with staffing rotations. *11. Demonstrates
responsibility for own professional practice and growth by ensuring
clinical knowledge base and skills are maintained and enhanced.12.
Organizes on a continuum due to the changing status of the patients
and environment.13. Maintains environment and equipment in an
appropriate manner. Supports unit teams. Resolves problems.
Supports customer service. * WORKING CONDITIONSPhysical
Environment/Hazards: Work is performed primarily in the Operating
Room. Must possess sufficient dexterity to use equipment, perform
technical tasks and render patient care on a daily basis. Walks or
stands most of shift. Must have sufficient knowledge of basic body
mechanics and physical strength to safely move patients and/or
equipment so as not to injure self or others. Constant
interruptions and changing priorities may produce stress. Constant
exposure to diagnosed and undiagnosed communicable diseases.
Possibility for needle sticks. OSHA Category I: Duties performed
routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue. TB
Exposure: There is an occupational risk for exposure to TB and the
incumbent is required to take Particulate Respirator Fit testing.
