Safety & Environmental Engineer / Project Engineer
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Manager, Environmental, this position will work in
the global Health, Safety, Environmental & Sustainability
(HSE&S) department. This role will closely collaborate with
both sustainability and environmental teams to support the delivery
of company goals while ensuring compliance with legal requirements
and maintaining data integrity of all environmental performance
metrics. This role is expected to refine existing sustainability &
environmental programs and procedures to improve effectiveness and
efficiency.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited
to:
- Demonstrate subject matter expertise, providing oversight and
guidance on sustainability & environmental topics across the
company, including but not limited to, air permitting regulations
(CAAPP, construction permits, etc.), greenhouse gas emissions,
carbon footprint, lifecycle analysis, Spill Prevention Control and
Countermeasures Plan (SPCC), Hazard Communication and GHS, Toxic
Substances Control Act (TSCA), asbestos, industrial air and noise
monitoring, pollution prevention, Emergency Response Planning,
DOT/IATA, Hazardous Materials Shipping requirements (land, air and
ocean).
- Develop system to pro-actively identify and track all
applicable environmental regulation applicable to S&C sites at
the Local, State, and Federal levels, including - but not limited
to - Chicago, IL, Palatine, IL, Franklin, WI, and West Palm Beach,
FL.
- Maintain, track, and report compliance status and impact on
business operations for all S&C sites including - but not
limited to - air, water, refrigerants, nonhazardous and hazardous
waste, RCRA, and any other applicable regulations or permit
requirements.
- Establish, coordinate, and help conduct facility audits and
inspections as needed to ensure operations in all S&C sites are
compliant with appliable regulation and perform periodic and
systematic review of audit data to identify issues, insights,
trends, improvement opportunities, etc.
- Manage all regulatory and environmental performance data and
metrics, ensuring their integrity, streamlining their gathering and
overall management - including automation opportunities and the
development of high-level dashboards and reports -, and
successfully documenting corrective actions - including their
status, root cause, and resolution.
- Support the development and management of environmental
programs focused on new market trends and regulatory needs such as
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), end-of-life product
management, REACH, RoHS and PFAs compliance, etc.
- Prepare, calibrate, and use any applicable instrumentation
needed to collect and analyze environmental samples and conduct
other monitoring as needed to ensure compliance, executing any
sampling and data collection required, such as for process water
discharge permit requirements.
- Provide complete ownership of the delivery of the company's
environmental performance and compliance analytics, delivering
complex information in a clear and concise way, while ensuring and
certifying data integrity.
- Enhance/refine reporting through the design of dashboards and
other data visualization techniques that enhance leadership's
understanding of and access to key metrics and overall
environmental performance and compliance data and status.
- Develops, automates, and maintains internal sustainability &
environmental SharePoint Online sites, including KPI dashboards,
survey forms, newsletters, project centers, tasks, and issue
tracking systems, etc.
- Support management of outside contractors and consultants and
create system to manage compliance with S&C rules to minimize
liability and ensure environmental compliance.
- Support the development of a formal ISO 14001:2015 management
system, streamlining current practices to ensure data integrity and
easy access to data to form insights and successfully address
corrective actions, while also conducting internal and external
audits as needed.
To apply for this job, at a minimum, the following is required:
- B.S. in Environmental Engineering/Sciences, Chemical
Engineering/Chemistry, or other Life Sciences or equivalent
professional tenure.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in an Environmental
role.
- Ability to occasionally work off hours as needed, travel weekly
to other US sites near our Chicago headquarters (within 80 miles),
and up to 25% travel to other S&C global locations.
- Previous experience working with data analytics and management
software and tools such as Intelex, Gensuite, Enablon, Cority, GaBi
software, Sphera, Oracle, PowerBI, SharePoint Online, etc.
- Previous experience with project management and PMP
certification is a plus.
- Incident Investigation proficiency including risk assessment
and root cause analysis, countermeasure development and PDCA
measures.
- Demonstrated sustained high-level performance and ability to
ensure environmental governmental compliance, insights, and best
practices to guide corporate decision making and establish rapport
with strong oral and written communication skills to effectively
coach, teach, train, collaborate, and report to team members,
experts in different areas, and Sr. Leadership throughout S&C
globally.
- Demonstrated subject matter expertise of environmental
governmental regulations at the Federal, State, and Local levels to
translate and anticipate business questions and needs into
appropriate analytical problems, perform high-quality analysis, and
turn outputs into concrete, actionable business insights.
MAJOR PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- This job will require weekly travel by car and may require
periodic travel up to 25% by air, to S&C locations to perform
in-person inspections and investigations in a wide variety of
factory and office environments, attend offsite seminars and
training activities for continued safety and/or environmental
development.
- Activities such as standing, extensive walking, climbing stairs
& ladders, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching,
handling and may be exposed to hot/cold temperatures will
occasionally be required.
- Frequent use of computers and office equipment is
required.
- Ability to support on call and work after hours as
needed.
- Must have ability to be onsite 5 days a week.
